Chapter 5 | Already knew?

I am currently parking my car in the parking lot of my family's house. It's 7:58 PM, so I know, I won’t be late to meet my grandmother.

After parking, I entered the mansion, where everyone was sitting at the dining table.

I wondered why everyone was gathered and how they were all free.

“Come, Advait, sit with us and have dinner,” my grandmother said, being the first one to see me, causing everyone’s attention to turn toward me.

“Yes,” I replied as I walked toward the dining table.

“I’m happy that you are here on time,” my dad said coldly.

I glanced at him; it wasn’t true—he was never happy with me, always disappointed.

I sat in my chair, with my mother on my right and my younger brother Abhishek on my left.

As I sat down, the servant came to serve me food.

“How are you, son?” my mother asked, smiling and placing her hand on my cheek.

“Fine,” I replied dryly.

“Advait, how is work going in New York?” my dad asked as if he didn’t already know.

I wondered what they all wanted—me to answer their trivial questions?

“It’s going well,” I replied with a cold expression.

I wished I could just escape this dinner and rest.

“Why are you so quiet?” I asked Abhishek.

“Abhi thodi der mein aap bhi ho jaoge,” he said, looking at me with a strange expression.

(You will also be quiet for a while.)

“What do you mean?” I asked him.

“Just wait a bit,” he said, confusing me further.

“Advait, we all wanted to tell you something,” my grandmother asserted.

“What?” I asked, trying to sound calm.

“You are going to be engaged to Kiara Singhania,” she announced.

Everyone looked at me, anticipating a dramatic reaction.

“Okay,” I said without any emotion.

I had expected this; my family seemed shocked.

“So you don’t have any objections?” my father asked.

“If I say no, will you cancel the engagement?” I replied, meeting their eyes with indifference.

“No, everything has been decided. We are not asking you—we are telling you,” my grandmother stated firmly.

“Then it’s not like I have an option.”

“Alright then, we’ll be meeting them next week on Saturday. You can meet her there.” Grandmother said.

“Will this news be shared with the public?” I asked her.

“No, not until you are engaged.” She said while eating her food.

“When is the engagement?” I asked.

“We haven’t decided that yet; no one knew you would accept so easily.” She said while looking at me.

“I don’t know her,” I said.

“You can meet her next week.” She said calmly.

“Maa, aap galat decision kyun le rahe ho?” my father asked my grandmother.

("Mom, why are you making a wrong decision?")

“Koi galat decision nahi hai isme,” she replied.

("There is nothing wrong with this decision.")

“She is a lawyer. Malhotra ghar ki bahu ek lawyer kaise ho sakti hai?” he asked angrily.

(She is a lawyer. How can a lawyer be the daughter-in-law of the Malhotra family?)

So, she is a lawyer—interesting.

“Rajiv, tum bhool rahe ho ki main jab tak zinda hoon, tab tak kis ghar ke decisions main lungi, na ki tum. So you shouldn’t interfere; she is a well-mannered girl,” my grandmother responded with a steely face.

(Rajiv, I think I need to remind you that till I am alive, all the decisions in this house will be taken by me and not you.)

Here I am, getting engaged, and my father is having issues with my soon-to-be fiancée.

I stood up, tired from all this drama and left for my room.

Today, a lot has happened.

Kiara Singhania, you’re in for a big mess.

I managed to stay calm at the dinner table, but I will do everything to cancel this engagement.

I will make you cancel it yourself.

I got lost in my thoughts when I received a call from Kartik. I picked it up.

“Bhai, aaj toh baat kar li, abhi bhi raat ko baat karega?” I asked, feeling annoyed.

(Bro, you talked today, are you going to talk again tonight?)

“Calm down, Advait. What happened? Why are you acting like this?” he asked, laughing.

“I don’t want to talk. I need to sleep; I’m tired,” I replied.

“Liar, you are upset because you’re getting engaged,” he teased.

I knew he must have heard about it.

“Toh tujhe bhi pata tha, bhai tum log dushman bana lo mujhe,” I responded.

("So you knew too; you guys are making me an enemy.")

“Nahi baby, aise nahi bolte. Mujhe pata tha, lekin aunty ne mana kiya tha mujhe tujhe batane se.” He said.

("No way, don’t say that. I knew, but your aunt forbade me from telling you.")

“Han Han, ja tu aunty ka dost ban ja,” I replied sarcastically.

(Yeah yeah, go be friends with my aunt.")

“Don’t be jealous, Advait. Now tell me, what’s your plan?” he asked, laughing.

“I am not getting engaged,” I stated firmly.

“Jaise teri koi sun raha hai,” he replied with a smirk.

(Like someone will actually listen to you.)

“I will make her cancel the engagement.”

“She won’t be getting engaged to you anytime soon; she’s only 25. She will at least ask for one year.” He spoke.

“You also know her age?” I asked him.

“Just the age and her profession—she’s a lawyer.” He spoke again.

“I know.”

“It will be so interesting. Jis ghar mein ladkiyon ka opinion matter nahi karta, uss ghar ki bahu ek lawyer banegi. Mujhe toh tera future dekh kar darr lag raha hai, kaafi kharab hai,” he said, laughing loudly.

("It will be so interesting—where women’s opinions don’t matter, the daughter-in-law will be a lawyer. I’m worried for your future; it looks pretty bad.")

“I don’t remember when it was good. I need to sleep. Bye,” I said, ready to end the conversation.

“Okay, okay, bye,” he said before hanging up.

I will make sure she regrets her decision to get engaged to me.
